A small community in the US state of California is to give way to the construction of a power plant. Such power plants are to be built across California. The respective landowners should be compensated for the loss of their land in order to be able to resettle elsewhere. However, since the municipality has only leased the land, the members will not receive any compensation. In order to blackmail the governor of the state, some members of the commune form a terrorist group called The Children of Eden . You are threatening an earthquakeunless the construction of all power plants in California is stopped. In order to divert suspicion from themselves and their goals, a wrong trail is laid.

Vibroseis vehicle

In order to trigger the earthquake, the leader of the group, Priest, steals a Vibroseis vehicle (referred to in the book as a " seismic vibrator ") and kills the driver. When the governor refuses to give in to the threat, a small earthquake is triggered. To do this, seismologist Melanie, who is with the group, helps gather data for sites favorable to creating an earthquake. If you know the places where enough pressure has built up on the tectonic plates , an earthquake could be triggered with a load of dynamite, for example.

The FBI has appointed Judy Maddox to investigate the case. She is the daughter of an Irish-American father and a Vietnamese mother and plans to pursue a career with the FBI. At first she is indignant about what a rookie case she was assigned, since the threat of causing an earthquake is dismissed as crazy. But gradually Maddox begins to develop an interest. Since at this time her superior is changing and the two don't like each other, he keeps putting obstacles in her way and finally pulls her back completely from the case. From that moment on, she begins to research on her own.
