Vibroseis
Vibroseis , also known as vibro-seismics , is a method of reflection seismics in which the earth's surface is vibrated by mostly mobile devices and the reflected signal is received and evaluated by geophones .
The term vibroseis is originally from the US company Continental Oil Company that this method in 1954 for exploration of oil - deposits patented.
Further applications are the exploration of natural gas deposits or of certain rock layers for use by geothermal energy .
Vibroseis vehicles
Years ago for investigations of this kind it was still necessary to generate the necessary energy for measurable signals by blasting , nowadays special vehicles are often used with which the exploration can be carried out effectively and also in urban surroundings.
These Vibroseis vehicles have a high mass and are equipped with vibrating plates in the vehicle center section , which are mostly operated hydraulically . To apply the vibration energy, the plates are extended down to the surface of the earth or the road and raise the vehicle slightly in order to achieve a defined ground pressure.
The frequency of the vibrations , which are usually emitted by several of these vehicles at the same time, is in the two to three-digit Hertz range. In inhabited areas, the process often only takes a few seconds to reduce the exposure to noise and vibrations, e.g. B. Damage to buildings (DIN 4150) to be kept as low as possible.
