Sister party

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As a sister party independent from each other parties are designated the same or similar orientation and political objective.

According to the type, national sister parties and international sister parties are to be distinguished.

National

National sister parties are often independent regional trainings from a party-political direction organization that acts together across the country. In parliamentary representations at supraregional level, such sister parties are usually organized in a group of factions .

Examples of national sister parties in Germany are the CDU and the CSU in the Federal Republic and historically the Center Party and the BVP in the Weimar Republic . In contrast to the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag , there was no group between the center and BVP at the time. A Spanish example are the Catalan Socialists ( PSC ), which form a sister party of the all-Spanish socialist party PSOE (with a group of factions in the Spanish Parliament ).

Another example is the connection between the FPÖ and the Freedom Party in Carinthia , which began cooperating with the FPÖ in 2010 as the BZÖ Carinthia was renamed and then fully integrated into the FPÖ as a regional association in 2013.

International

The Liberal Democratic Party of Russia has close ties with parties in Belarus , Ukraine, Kazakhstan , Armenia, Azerbaijan and Transnistria. Many of them, including the LDPR, are successors to the Liberal Democratic Party of the Soviet Union.

In San Marino, three parties were founded as counterparts to Italian parties: the United Left as a counterpart to the Sinistra Ecologia Libertà , the Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese as a sister party of the former Democrazia Cristiana and the Partito dei Socialisti e dei Democratici as a counterpart to the Partito Democratico . There were similar examples in the Free Territory of Trieste .

The Lega dei Ticinesi is similar in name to the Lega Nord and both parties cooperate with one another. For the south of Italy there is the party We with Salvini . The Lega Nord party secretary is the president of Wir mit Salvini . The French Ligue du Sud was also named after the Lega Nord.

International sister parties that feel connected across national borders due to ideological similarities, on the other hand, usually have only loose organizational connections or limit themselves to informal contacts. They are also often not congruent politically and programmatically. For example, parts of the German AfD see their party as a sister party of the Austrian FPÖ , although the parties differ greatly in their origins and in some basic political concepts. The Freedom Party of South Tyrol deliberately lean on the FPÖ in terms of name, party color and ideology.

International

As early as 1864, the First International was an international union of party political sister organizations. Others followed their example. a. the Liberal International (1947) and the Christian-Democratic World Union (1961).

European Union

At the European level, party federations were formed in the run-up to the first direct elections to the European Parliament . The organizational core of these alliances today form party secretariats, most of which are located in Brussels or Strasbourg , as well as the respective groups in the European Parliament .
