Piranhas is an American animal horror film directed by Joe Dante in 1978. This B-film was produced by Roger Corman .

action

Two teenagers are mysteriously killed while swimming in a sealed-off pool. The private detective Maggie McKeown is hired to look for the two missing people.

Together with Paul Grogan, she comes across the remains of the two. You arrange for the water to be used against the wishes of the owner, Dr. Robert Hoak is let out of the pool, but deadly and highly aggressive piranhas that were specially bred by the military for the Vietnam War can escape into the outside world, which killed the two teenagers.

The animals were tested in the research laboratory of Dr. Robert Hoak made it resistant to a number of environmental factors such as salt water and developed it into man-eating predatory fish.

In the river they attack the population and cause a bloodbath. Dr. Robert Hoak dies in the rescue operations. With the help of Maggie, Paul Grogan finally succeeds, risking his life, in opening the underwater locks of the dam and introducing a poison into the water that is deadly for the fish before they reach the ocean. The piranhas are dying, but the off-screen narrator leaves it open as to whether some of the predatory fish may have got into the sea after all.

Piranhas had its US premiere on August 3, 1978. In the Federal Republic of Germany , the film first opened in cinemas on October 26, 1978.

In 1981 the sequel Piranha 2 - Flying Killer was produced. The film was directed by James Cameron and starred by Tricia O'Neil . In 1995, directed by Scott P. Levy, a remake called The Return of the Piranhas , in which Roger Corman and screenwriter John Sayles is involved. In 2010 a remake was released with the title Piranha 3D . Directed by Alexandre Aja . In 2012 the sequel Piranha 3DD appeared .

The 1979 released Piranhas II - The Revenge of the Killer Fish , however, is not a sequel, its title in the original is just Killer Fish . The film Mega Piranha from 2010 is not a sequel either. The film was produced by The Asylum , who are known for their mockbusters that are based on movies, such as Piranha 3D in this case .
