Piranha 2 - Flying Killer (Alternative title: Flying Killer - Piranha II ) is a 1981 horror film directed by James Cameron and the sequel to the 1978 low-budget film Piranhas .

action

Anne Kimbrough is a diving instructor at the "Club Elysium", a hotel on a holiday island. She lives with her son Chris, separated from her husband, the beach policeman Steve, in a room in the hotel. When she and a group of students inspect a sunken boat, one of the group separates and dives into the boat against her instructions. When Anne dives after him, it's too late. The man was killed by voracious predatory fish. Together with her student Tyler, who tries to seduce her, she decides to investigate the whole thing. However, her husband does not want to know about it and blames her for the husband's death.

Tyler and Anne break into the autopsy room to take a closer look at the man's wounds and take pictures. However, you are caught doing this by a nurse. The two flee hastily and without a key card. The nurse is trying to fix the body when a fish jumps out of the dead man's belly and bites her throat. Tyler and Anne examine the photos and grow closer to each other in the hotel room. The next morning, an angry Steve stands in front of the door, who blames Anne further. Later in the day, Tyler and Anne dive down to the boat and spot some of the strange fish. You can barely escape.

Anne suspects Tyler knows more than he pretends to be and confronts him with it. After some pressure, Tyler comes out with the truth: The military has been doing secret research to develop dangerous fighting fish from a cross between flying fish , piranhas and a few other species. Some specimens of this species have disappeared and appear to have appeared at the hotel. With the help of her husband, Anne tries to convince the hotel manager to issue a warning, but he laughs at the two of them.

Steve, Anne and a few volunteers decide to take matters into their own hands. After the death of his son, the dynamite fisherman Randy tries to develop an explosive device that is supposed to blow up the hatchery of the fish, the boat wreck. Randy is killed in a fish attack on a party held at the hotel. Now it's up to Tyler and Anne to lay the explosive device. Meanwhile, Steve takes the helicopter to find Chris, who has disappeared. While Anne and Tyler are placing the explosive device, Steve finds his son and his girlfriend Allison and is barely able to save them. The helicopter is destroyed and the three flee onto Anne's submersible.

Anne and Tyler place the explosive device, but then have to flee from the fish. Tyler is killed in the process. Anne just manages to hold on to the anchor of the submersible. Steve and his son have given up hope and are fleeing the impending explosion. Then Anne emerges from the sea and the two are relieved.

production

James Cameron was originally scheduled to do the film's special effects , but took over the direction when director HA Milton (who wrote the script under this pseudonym) left the production. Due to a limited budget , the crew mostly relied on Italian people, none of whom could speak English. However, since they already had experience with horror / fantasy films, they were able to meet Cameron's expectations.

After the first week of shooting, the harmony was disturbed by some discussions about the director's collaboration with producer Ovidio G. Assonitis , who was not happy with Cameron's choices. As long as Cameron was only responsible for the shoot, most of the decisions fell under Assonitis' authority. According to Dreaming Aloud , a biography of James Cameron created by Christopher Heard , Cameron was not allowed to view recordings and they were not edited. He broke into the editing room in Rome and edited his own version while the producers were in Cannes. But he was caught and Assonitis cut it back again.

In a 2008 interview with The Hour , Cameron jokingly denied that he had broken into the editing room and then said the story was a "hypothetical scenario": Cameron explained to host George Stroumboulopoulos "how he broke into the office", if he had done it.

Just as it did the first part was one of many horror films of Steven Spielberg's hit movie Jaws inspired. Piranhas act as antagonist monsters, harm human life and have the ability to fly, unlike in the first part. On the Terminator 2 - Judgment Day Comment Disc , Cameron jokingly claimed "it was the best killer fish flying horror comedy ever".

Most of the underwater scenes were filmed off Grand Cayman and the stand-in for the club was Elysium Beach Mallard Hyatt . Indoor shots were shot in a film studio in Rome.

reception

Some critics said the film was "pathetic," while others said that "the piranhas look like they've been sold in a joke store" and that they are "like haddock with dentures." The film is getting rotting on Rotten Tomatoes of 8%.
