Mega Piranha , also known as Megapiranha , is a 2010 American animal horror film directed by Eric Forsberg .

action

The American ambassador and foreign minister of Venezuela are killed on the Orinoco . The American government suspects a terrorist attack and sends its best husband Jason Fitch to the scene to clarify the case. At the airport he is met not only by men from the junta leader Colonel Antonio Diaz, who are supposed to monitor his every step, but also by scientist Dr. Sarah Monroe. The genetics professor is working in a UNESCO laboratory on the effects of genetically manipulated feed on fish and explains to Fitch that piranhas , which mutate due to the feeding, have escaped from the laboratory. Research has shown that they double their size within a few hours. However, Colonel Diaz insists that the politicians' ship was damaged in an explosion and that no fish were involved. Fitch is being held like a prisoner on the junta base. He breaks out and makes his own way to the crime scene, where he can catch a massive piranha on a dive. Only the copy convinces Diaz that mutated piranhas are in the river. Investigations by Monroe and her colleagues Dr. Higgins and Dr. Gordon revealed that the piranhas, among other things, have developed more organs and can reproduce with themselves.

The mutant piranhas are separated from the rest of the river by a natural dam, so the scientists plan to dry out the area in a controlled manner. Diaz has plans of his own and is shooting at the area by helicopter. The dam is destroyed and the fish swim towards the sea, getting bigger and bigger over time. Diaz captures Monroe and the other explorers, but Fitch can rescue them. Via the US Secretary of State Bob Grady, Fitch has a destroyer stationed at the mouth of the river to the sea. The monstrous fish destroy a port facility and kill, among others, Dr. Higgins. When they arrive at the mouth of the sea, which is supposed to act as a natural barrier due to the salt water, the piranhas are shot at, but only a part is killed. The piranhas are now moving towards Florida . More animals are killed by a nuclear submarine, which is shortly afterwards eaten by the surviving piranhas. Grady plans a major nuclear attack on the piranhas, but Fitch can dissuade him. During his first dive, he realized that piranhas also kill other species when they bleed. He and other specialists go on a dive off the coast of Florida and kill a piranha at the last second. All conspecifics are attracted to the blood and fall into a blood frenzy that ultimately wipes out the mutants. Fitch is expected back ashore by the Secretary of State and Monroe, and Monroe finally kisses Fitch.

production

Mega Piranha was filmed in Belize within 15 days . Gregory Paul Smith created the costumes and Marissa Leguizamon created the film. While much of the piranhas in the film are computer animated, some animals were represented by puppets. Singer and leading actress Tiffany contributed the song Frozen Skies to the film .

The film was produced by The Asylum , who conceived it as a mockbuster of the 2010 movie Piranha 3D . It was the first film that director Eric Forsberg made for The Asylum, not only directing but also writing the script. Only the film title Mega Piranha given by The Asylum served as the basis of the book . The producer of The Asylum called him "because I'm the type who can only write things on the basis of a few words," Forsberg said in an interview.

While Piranhas 3D only opened in US cinemas on August 20, 2010, Mega Piranha was shown on TV on Syfy on April 10, 2010 . At the premiere, 2.2 million viewers tuned in. The film was released on DVD in Germany in October 2010. On October 18, 2013 it was shown as part of the series The worst films of all time on Tele 5 on German television, where it was commented by Oliver Kalkofe and Peter Rütten .

criticism

"The film is a hit for friends of the most undemanding entertainment and should actually only be allowed to be sold together with a voucher for a crate of beer," said filmstarts.de. Cinema called Mega Piranha "the imitation of a film by a talentless crew" and summarized: "Here even our angler's Latin fails".
