The Hole - What are you afraid of? (Original title: The Hole , alternative title: The Hole - The mysterious trapdoor ) is an American horror film by Joe Dante from 2009.

action

Dane and his little brother Lucas move with their mother Susan from New York to the small town of Bensenville , which is located in the American Midwest . You want to draw a line under the past, in which the family had to suffer from a violent father who is now in prison. Danes' concerns that he would be bored to death in the provinces soon dissipate when he meets the attractive daughter of a neighbor, Julie. Together with her, the brothers explore a mysterious, deep hole that is under a wooden crate in the basement of their house.

To their horror, they discover that supernatural powers are escaping the hole. They realize that their innermost fears and unprocessed memories are manifesting out of the hole to terrorize them. In the case of little Lucas, it's a diabolically laughing harlequin doll , Julie is haunted by the ghost of a childhood friend she once couldn't help when she fell to her death in an amusement park , and for Dane it's the brutal father he couldn't cope with . After all, everyone manages in their own way to overcome their fears and defeat the demons of the past. They manage to close the flap and the next time you open it, instead of the deep hole, only a pit with a water pipe can be seen. At the end the children go up the basement stairs with their mother and the mother says: "I used to be afraid of monsters under my bed", whereupon the trap door opens again.

Reviews

“Although 'The Hole' manages almost without a drop of blood, some sequences turn out to be a bit too creepy for a very young audience. Long-established horror bunnies, on the other hand, are more likely to have a pleasant feeling of nostalgia than goose bumps [...] With 'The Hole', Joe Dante has delivered a solid family horror film that is entertaining until the end thanks to its successful implementation, but has noticeably little new to offer . "

background

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2009. In Germany, the film was released on DVD on June 7, 2011.

It was shot with an estimated budget of $ 12 million in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, e.g. B. at the Kittanning Citizens Bridge , and in Vancouver, Canada . Worldwide revenue was $ 10,362,785. There were 1,157,749 cinema-goers across Europe.

The book Julie reads in bed has an analogy to the content of the film. It's La Divina Commedia by Dante Alighieri and the creed on the cover clearly refers to the people who disappear into the hole:

"Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate."

"You who enter here have lost all hope."
