action
There are problems at Vince Lombardi High School: One principal after another throws in the towel, as the students are more interested in rock 'n' roll than in class. The rebellious student representative Riff Randell, a big fan of the Ramones , stands out in particular . To finally discipline the students, Miss Evelyn Togar, who despises rock music, comes to the school as the new director. When she celebrated with the students' parents a public burning of records, including the Ramones albums Road to Ruin and Rocket to Russia and the albums Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan , Sticky Fingers by the Rolling Stones and Open Fire by Ronnie Montrose is, the school was occupied by the students with the help of the Ramones. When the school is besieged by the police and the students leave the building, student Riff Randell sets off an explosion - and the school goes up in flames.
background
Rock 'n' Roll High School is still popular long after its premiere, largely due to the musical contribution of the Ramones . This film was planned by producer Roger Corman with completely different music. At the end of the 1970s, disco was the hip style of music, as the films Saturday Night Fever and Grease , which were released at the time, illustrate this clearly. Also Rock 'n' Roll High School should be accompanied with disco music and original Disco High hot. However, since this could not be reconciled with the rebellious undertone of the film and the director of the film, Allan Arkush , was a fan of the Ramones, the choice fell on her. Other bands that were eligible but dropped were Cheap Trick , Todd Rundgren , Devo and Van Halen .
The film was shot in the disused Mount Carmel High School in South Los Angeles , California, which had closed in 1976. The actual demolition of the school was included in the form of an explosion at the end of the film. Another location was Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach , California. The concert scenes with a raging audience were recorded with the Ramones in December 1978 in the famous music club The Roxy in the city of West Hollywood . The concert audience, made up of numerous extras, included Darby Crash , the singer of the punk rock band Germs , and Pat Smear , the guitarist of the Germs, who was a brief member of the grunge band Nirvana from 1993 onwards. However, those scenes in the artist's dressing room were recorded at the Whiskey a Go Go music club .
Regarding the leading role of the schoolgirl Riff Randell, the filmmakers had chosen the actress PJ Soles because of her outstanding presence as supporting actress in the horror film Halloween - The Night of Horror from 1978. In the role of the strict school principal Evelyn Togar is the actress Mary Woronov to see, which formerly belonged to the artist group around Pop Art co-founder Andy Warhol . The comic-like cover artwork for the film, which resembles a hidden object , comes from the illustrator William Stout , who is otherwise mainly known for his paleontological and fantasy- influenced drawings. In 1991 there was a sequel to the film called Rock and Roll High School Forever, starring actor Corey Feldman .
reception
“Designed as a shrill parody, but getting bogged down in a lame jumble potpourri, the film reaches the German video and DVD market after more than 20 years, which is less to be attributed to its quality than to the still not ebb of the 1980s. Revival and the cult status of the participating "Ramones". Music fans will certainly get their money's worth, but everyone else is offered an unimportant teen comedy at an amateur level. "
