In addition to the publication of reading books for German lessons and numerous publications for specialist journals, Egon Gramer dealt primarily with contemporary German-language literature. At the same time he wrote numerous works for radio .

For the Mörike year 2004 he conceived and organized the young Mörike festival in Blaubeuren .

In 2005 Egon Gramer published his autobiographical debut novel Geanned: Franz Klett . He owed the material to his regular visits to his home village: there, in the 1970s, he was given bags of "souvenir waste" from a former schoolmate who died early. He copied the lyrics and let them rest until 2003. It was only after his retirement that he processed it into the story of his enigmatic, tragic hero within six months. “The crux of the matter was that he now appears in it himself. In the form of the occasional returnees from the village, Helmut, who meets the son of the deceased outsider and who puzzles together his memories. 'I didn't invent anything, but I had to mix the colors.' ”(Quoted from Schwäbisches Tagblatt from September 20, 2005). Martin Walser found out about the novel through Arnold Stadler and spoke of a "language miracle".
