¡Adios Amigos! (Spanish for: "Goodbye friends!") is the last studio album by the American punk band Ramones . It was released in 1995. After the band split up in 1996, several live and best-of albums by the group were released.

History of origin

Even before the album was released, the group had announced that ¡Adios Amigos! would be her last studio work. After a twenty-two year career and almost uninterrupted touring, the last two remaining founding members, singer Joey Ramone and guitarist Johnny Ramone , were at the end of their creative and health powers.

After years of stagnating sales and hoping in vain for greater commercial success in the form of a chart hit , the band said they were largely indifferent to the sales success of this last album. Quote from Johnny Ramone:

"It was better when we didn't care if the record would sell and just made them for our fans." (German: "It was better when we didn't care if the record would sell and we only recorded it for our fans.")

The album was produced by the band's longtime friend, Daniel Rey , who was the second guitarist on the group's previous albums. Rey is also - together with ex-bassist Dee Dee Ramone - the author of six of the thirteen tracks on the album and also contributed additional guitar parts to the recordings. The youngest band member, bassist CJ Ramone , took over the vocals on four of the songs included .

In the illustrations on the cover, the band plays ironically with their self-image and their impending dissolution: the front shows a painting of two dinosaurs by US artist Mark Kostabi, while the back cover photo shows the band "placed on the wall" in front of a firing squad.

The pieces of music on the album (selection)

  • The two tracks Making Monsters For My Friends and It's Not For Me To Know were already released in 1994 on the album I Hate Freaks Like You recorded by Dee Dee Ramones with the ICLC formation .
  • The title The Crusher is due to Dee Dee Ramone's short rap career as "Dee Dee King" and was previously included on his solo album Standing In The Spotlight , released under this pseudonym .
  • It also includes cover versions of Tom Wait's composition I Don't Want to Grow Up and Johnny Thunder's piece I Love You .
  • The Japanese edition of the album contains a Ramones version of the tribute song RAMONES by the hard rock band Motörhead as a bonus title, while the US edition has a cover version of the song Spider Man ( Paul Francis Webster ) instead .
  • On the last song of the album, Born To Die In Berlin , Dee Dee Ramone sings the last verse in German, recorded over a telephone.

The compilation is called "The Chrysalis Years" because at the time of these albums the Ramones in Great Britain were under contract with the music label Chrysalis .

Individual evidence

  1. Dee Dee Ramone is a guest singer on the last track of the album, Born to Die in Berlin , for which he is also given as a co-author. He sings the third and last verse in it, according to the booklet of the album (European CD edition, Chrysalis Records Ltd., 1995) in German, but incomprehensible due to the strong alienation of the tone.
