Grady Sutton

Grady Harwell Sutton (born April 5, 1906 in Chattanooga , Tennessee , † September 17, 1995 in Woodland Hills , Los Angeles ) was an American actor.

Life

Grady Sutton came to film as early as the mid-1920s through a roommate, a younger brother of film director William A. Seiter , and made his debut in The Mad Whirl . The 1.88-meter-tall Sutton appeared in more than 200 films between 1925 and 1979. Sutton was mostly set on comedic supporting roles and often played inexperienced, foolish, fearful and simple-minded characters. He had his best-known roles in film comedies, including several times alongside WC Fields , for example as Fields' naive work colleague and future son-in-law in The Bank Detective (1940). In the Laurel and Hardy film The Devil Brothers (1932), he played a prevented bridegroom who is wrongly suspected of being Don Juan . Sutton was also a helpless dance partner of Katharine Hepburn in Alice Adams (1935). Most of the time, the comedy of Sutton's characters was characterized by their complete inability to deal with an absurd situation.

Grady Sutton worked for the weapons and aircraft manufacturer Lockheed during World War II after he was not accepted for active military service due to a stomach ailment . Later on, Sutton played almost only small roles in cinema and television productions, including in the drama A New Star in the Sky (1954), the musical My Fair Lady (1964), the western parody Even a Sheriff Needs Help (1971) and the sitcom Herrenwirtschaft with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall . In his home country he also became known to a wide audience through television commercials. Sutton left the acting business in 1979 with a supporting role in the musical comedy Rock 'n' Roll High School.

Grady Sutton was never married and had no children, and the film historian William Mann identified him as homosexual. According to Mann, according to the stereotypes about homosexuals, Sutton was often cast in effeminate or effeminate roles. The actor died in 1995 at the age of 89.
