Jenatsch is the title of a film about the Bündner pastor and politician Jörg Jenatsch based on the novel Jürg Jenatsch by Conrad Ferdinand Meyer . Daniel Schmid directed the 1987 Franco-Swiss co-production . The film opened in German cinemas on October 6, 1988.

action

The protagonist is the journalist Christophe Sprecher, who lives with his girlfriend Nina. During an interview with the aged anthropologist Dr. Tobler, who had examined Jenatsch's grave, a brass bell that is said to be the key to the secret of Jenatsch's murderer.

Sprecher discovers that thanks to the bell he can transport himself to the 17th century and his life is increasingly determined by Jenatsch. The relationship with Nina falls into a deep crisis. When trying to put everything back in order, he gets into a mask frenzy and kills the drinking Jenatsch.

criticism

  • film-dienst : An elegantly staged and photographed dream game that, despite the obvious talent of its director, dissolves too non-bindingly. The figure of the freedom hero also serves only as a hook for a game of confusion in which the various levels sometimes interpenetrate precisely.
