Jan Cornelis Terlouw (born November 15, 1931 in Kamperveen ) is a Dutch physicist , politician of the Democrats 66 (D66) and author .

Terlouw studied natural sciences in Utrecht , where he received his doctorate in 1963 (title of his dissertation published in 1964: Experimental study of a highly ionized steady-state cesium plasma ). From the end of the 1950s to the beginning of the 1970s he was mainly entrusted with various research projects in the field of plasma physics , including two years at MIT .

Politics and administration

In 1967 he joined the left-wing liberal Democrats 66 party . In 1970 he was elected for her to the municipal council of Utrecht , in 1971 he became a member of parliament ( Tweede Kamer ). In 1973 he became chairman of the parliamentary group, which was de facto the role of party leader. Under his leadership, the party experienced a significant upswing in electoral favor in the second half of the 1970s. When the D66, after the successful election in 1981, in which they received more than 10% of the vote for the first time, took part in a government coalition with the CDA and the PvdA , Terlouw became Minister of Economics and Deputy Prime Minister. After the early break of the three-party coalition, the D66 formed a minority cabinet with the CDA, but lost nearly two thirds of their voters and seats in the new election in 1982. He only took on a leading role in his party again in the years 1999 to 2003, when he was deputy chairman of their group in the First Chamber. In the intervening period, he held various positions and offices in the administrative area. From 1983 to 1991 he was Secretary General of the European Conference of Transport Ministers and subsequently from 1991 to 1996 the Queen's Commissioner for the Province of Gelderland .
