action

Brimstone is set in America during the time of the Wild West . The plot is divided into four chapters called Revelation , Exodus , Genesis, and Retribution.

In the first part, the mute midwife Liz lives on a farm with her husband Eli, their daughter Sam and their stepson Matthew. One day, a new pastor takes over the local church, just called the Reverend in the film . When Liz sees him, she is seized with great fear and tries to avoid a meeting.

During a birth assisted by Liz, she has to kill the baby to save the mother's life. Her husband Nathan comes to Liz's farm at night and wants to take revenge on her, but is appeased by the passing Reverend. In the following scene it becomes clear that the Reverend and Liz know each other and that he wants to punish her for something.

When the Reverend kills all the sheep in the family and Liz locks her up in the barn to be able to contact her little daughter, one night Liz goes to the parsonage with a knife, but finds no one there. Meanwhile, the Reverend kills her husband and sets fire to the courtyard. Liz and the two children flee to Eli's father.

In the second part, a girl named Joanna wandering in the desert is sold to a brothel where she has to work as a prostitute. Having grown up, she turns out to be the one called "Liz" in the first part. Joanna's best friend is the prostitute Elizabeth Brundy, whose tongue is cut out one day by the pimp Frank. Elizabeth plans to flee the brothel and arranges a marriage with the widower Eli, who lives far away, through a marriage broker.

One night, the Reverend appears as a customer in the brothel and attacks Joanna with the belt. Elizabeth tries to protect her, but is killed by the Reverend. Joanna manages to slit the Reverend's neck and sets the room with the dead Elizabeth and the Reverend on fire before she escapes. She cuts her tongue out, impersonates her dead friend, and heads off to see Eli and Matthew.

In the third part, Joanna lives, again as a girl, on a farm with the Reverend, who is her father, as now becomes clear. Her upbringing is shaped by the fundamental religious views of her father, her mother Anna suffers from him and is systematically beaten. When Joanna gets her first period, the Reverend lets it be known that he intends to have sexual intercourse with her.

When one day the outlaw Samuel shows up with his partner on the farm, Joanna hides them in the barn. She watches as Samuel kills his partner. Meanwhile Anna tries to revolt against her husband and prevent the planned rape of their daughter. As a punishment, he forces her into an iron mask of shame , whereupon she hangs herself. The Reverend then wants to marry Joanna. During the ceremony, Samuel appears and tries to free Joanna, but is killed by the Reverend. After he raped Joanna, she runs away.

The fourth part starts again where Joanna, as Liz, is on the run with Sam and Matthew to the children's grandfather, who lives by a lake. On the way, Matthew is shot by the Reverend. When the grandfather arrives, he is also killed by the Reverend. He ties Liz up and whips her daughter. But Liz can free herself and kills her father.

Some time later, Liz settled in at her father-in-law's former residence. But one day Nathan appears on site. He has now become sheriff and has learned that the real Elizabeth Brundy is wanted for the murder of her pimp Frank, which Liz was previously unknown. Liz is arrested and handcuffed to a boat. During the crossing, she falls into the water and drowns.

reception

Reviews

Brimstone received both positive and negative reviews. The explicitly portrayed acts of violence in the film were often discussed. Even the premiere audience was shocked and divided by the violence.

The film critic Richard Roeper described Brimstone as "unnecessarily confusing, pretentious, sadistic and excessively long". One can only “survive, not enjoy” the film.

Beatrice Behn wrote about the film: “Koolhoven doesn't think much of ambivalences. It is clearly divided which of its protagonists are good and bad, and that along the gender lines. Women are always pure of heart and victims of disgusting, dangerous and violent men. ”In conclusion, she asked:“ Is this a somewhat clunky and blood-soaked neo-western that is too crude to work properly - or is the film on purpose Trashy and over the top made to have fun and really show yourself off? (…) The fact is, however, that Brimstone is a little fascination and a strange kind of emancipatory cinema. "

The site Metacritic listed a total of 16 reviews for Brimstone on March 20, 2017 , only one of which it viewed as positive, 10 as mixed and 5 negative. 36% positive reviews were counted on Rotten Tomatoes on the same day.
