Alex van Warmerdam

Alex van Warmerdam (born August 14, 1952 in Haarlem ) is a Dutch director , screenwriter , actor and painter .

Life

Alex van Warmerdam studied graphics, design and painting at the renowned Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam . He then worked as an author, director and actor at the Hauser Orkater independent theater, which he co-founded .

In 1980 he founded the theater company De Mexicaanse Hond (German: The Mexican dog ) together with his brother Marc van Warmerdam and Thijs van der Poll .

His first film, the comedy Abel , was released in 1986. For Noorderlingen van Warmerdam was awarded the European Film Prize for Best Young Film and the Golden Calf for Best Director in 1992 . His film Borgman received an invitation to compete at the 66th Cannes Film Festival in 2013 . It was also the Netherlands 'official candidate for the Oscar for best foreign language film, but did not make it into the nominees' selection. In most of his films, van Warmerdam also appears as an actor in leading roles. He is also the author of the novel De Hand van een Vreemde .

He is married to the actress Annet Malherbe . The couple have two children.
