Werchau is a district of the town of Schlieben in the Elbe-Elster district in southern Brandenburg .

location

Werchau is approx. 7.5 kilometers as the crow flies northwest of the core town of Schlieben on the L 721 , which runs from Jeßnigk to Wiepersdorf . It borders in the northwest and north on Wildenau and Wiepersdorf (both places are districts of the town of Schönewalde ), in the east on Freileben (district of the Lebusa community ), in the southeast on the district Schlieben, in the south on Jeßnigk and in the west on Dubro . The district covers an area of 824.6 hectares.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1346 as Werchenaw and was an electoral Saxon fief . The place name is derived from Slavic and means settlement on an elevation . According to the settlement structure, Werchau is a street green village.

In 1360 Duke Rudolf bought the village from Hans Ratzigk. In 1419 the duke lent his property to Hans von Roßtog and Heinrich von der Lochow. After the death of Heinrich von der Lochow, Jorge von Draendorff received this part of the village from Elector Ernst as a fief in 1467 . In 1529 14 hoof farmers and a Kossät lived in Werchau. In 1591 the former property of von Roßtog is in the hands of Georg Löser. At the beginning of the 17th century, the entire village was finally owned by the von Drandorf family. Georg von Drandorf died in 1671. His heirs could not hold this property and in 1690 a von Lichtenhayn family is named as the owner. Further changes in ownership are assumed for the period up to the 18th century. There is evidence of a windmill in Werchau in 1721. In 1980 there were still remains of a post mill on the Mühlenberg north of the town center; these have completely disappeared today. At the end of the 18th century the estate belonged to the von Kleist family . A Mrs. Colonel von Kleist sold it in 1814 to Friedrich von Kleist on Tzschernewitz (today Czarnowice near Gubin , Poland). In 1835 he gave his property to Wilhelm Bogislaw Kleist vom Lotz and the estate was owned by the von Kleist family until 1922. With the exception of two hoof estates , the manor had patrimonial jurisdiction over the entire place.

Until 1815 Werchau belonged to the Saxon office of Schweinitz . Saxony had to cede the Schweinitz office to Prussia on May 21, 1815. This was combined with the previously Electoral Saxon offices of Schlieben and Seyda with only minor changes in area and borders to form the new Prussian district of Schweinitz ( administrative district of Merseburg , province of Saxony ). From 1939 onwards, the district was given the uniform imperial designation Landkreis Schweinitz. In 1950 it was renamed the Herzberg district. As early as 1952, the district was divided into the two new districts Herzberg and Jessen , Werchau became part of the Herzberg district. After the reunification, the district came to the re-established state of Brandenburg. In the course of the formation of offices in Brandenburg in 1992, Werchau formed the office of Schlieben with 15 other municipalities . On November 1, 2001, the communities of Frankenhain, Jagsal, Oelsig, Wehrhain, Werchau and the town of Schlieben merged to form the new town of Schlieben. Since then Werchau has been part of the city of Schlieben.
