The GVB is a transport company and the operator of the Metro , the tram , the city buses and the ferries of the Dutch capital Amsterdam . Originally GVB stood for Gemeentevervoerbedrijf ( ndl. For municipal transport company ).
GVB is a company of the city of Amsterdam and transports around 227.1 million passengers a year on all lines. The GVB has around 3,550 employees. The fleet includes around 108 underground and light rail cars, 216 trams, 215 buses and nine ferries .
history
The GVB was officially founded in 1900. The company at that time was still called the Gemeentetram . In 1943 the Gemeentevervoerbedrijf (GVB) was created by merging the tram company with the ferry company at the time .
The first bus line was opened as early as 1908. In 1916 the electrification of the tram was completed.
After the Second World War, Amsterdam got the 1000th tram car in 1950. In 1969 the night bus network was introduced. Eight years later, in 1977, the first metro line was opened. In 1990 the first express tram line 51 operated to Amstelveen . After another seven years (1997) the ring line 50 was opened.
In 2000 the GVB celebrated its 100th anniversary. In the period that followed, the network was continuously expanded and routes extended. In 2004 the head office of the GVB moved to the Arlandaweg. In 2007 the 30th anniversary of the metro was celebrated. In 2009, the Sarajevo public transport company received 16 old GVB trams.
