Immo Karaman

Immo Karaman (* 1972 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German theater director .

Life

In the Ruhr born as the son of German-Turkish parents grew up, studied Immo Karaman musicology in Bochum , Cologne and Berlin . After working as a freelance assistant in film and television and at the theater, he worked for several years as a permanent assistant director at the music theater in the Gelsenkirchen district , with Peter Konwitschny and Dietrich Hilsdorf , among others .

For his directorial debut with Béla Bartók's opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle at the Musiktheater im Revier, he received the Gelsenkirchen Theater Prize in 2001. Since then he has worked as a freelance director on major stages in Germany and Switzerland .

His staging of The Turn of the Screw by Benjamin Britten at the Leipzig Opera received a great deal of national attention. In 2009 he staged the opera Prova d'orchestra by Giorgio Battistelli at the Nuremberg State Theater .

Karaman was nominated in 2008 by the specialist magazine Opernwelt as the best director of the year.

In 2006, he was awarded the North Rhine-Westphalia Promotion Prize by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2010 he was nominated for the German Theater Prize Der Faust with his production of Doctor Atomic in the Saarland State Theater .
