Maurice Herriott

Maurice Herriott (born October 8, 1939 in Great Wyrley , South Staffordshire ) is a former English athlete who was second in the Olympic 3000 meter obstacle course in 1964 .

Life

Herriott, who started for the Sparkhill Harriers , won eight British championship titles in the 3,000 meter obstacle course between 1959 and 1967, only in 1960 he was unsuccessful. At the European Championships in 1962 , Herriott qualified fourth in his prelim in 8: 49.2 minutes for the final, but could not compete there due to injury. The British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1962 took place in Perth, Australia at the end of November. Here Herriott won the silver medal in 8: 45.0 minutes behind the Australian Trevor Vincent . At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , Herriott set a new Olympic record with 8: 33.0 minutes, which, however , was undercut in the next run by Adolfas Aleksejūnas from the Soviet Union. In the final, Aleksejūnas finished seventh, Herriott, however, increased his British record to 8: 32.4 min and won the silver medal behind the Belgian Gaston Roelants .

In 1965, Herriott won several international matches and ran eight times faster than the second best Brit of that year. In August 1966 at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games 1966 in Kingston , Jamaica, he ran in the final 8: 33.19 minutes and took fourth place behind the New Zealander Peter Welsh , the Australian Kerry O'Brien and the Kenyan Benjamin Kogo , whereby O'Brien was only six tenths of a second ahead of Herriott in second. Almost four weeks later, Herriott was in the final of the European Championships in 1966 , in 8: 37.0 minutes Herriott finished eighth. At the end of his career, Herriott took part in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , but retired there in the preliminary stages.

At a height of 1.78 m, Herriott's competition weight was 67 kg.
