The slender catfish (Amblycipitidae) are a fish family from the order of the catfish-like (Siluriformes). They are common in fast-flowing waters of South and East Asia from Pakistan to Malaysia , Korea and southern Japan .

features

Slender catfish are small loach- like fish with a total length of around four to fifteen centimeters. The front end of the body is flattened. The head has four pairs of barbels . The dorsal fin has a short base and, like the paired fins, is covered by a thick layer of skin. It has only a weak hard beam, which can lead to painful injuries. A hard ray is present in the pectoral fins. An adipose fin is present and in some species it merges into the caudal fin . The base of the anal fin is also short, with nine to eighteen soft rays. The lateral line organ is poorly developed or completely absent. The swim bladder has receded and is enclosed by bone. Typical of the family is a cup-like fold of skin in front of the pectoral fins , on which the gill membranes come to rest when the gill cover is closed . This could be an adaptation for breathing in fast flowing waters.

Systematics

The slender catfish are assigned to the superfamily Sisoroidea, which according to molecular biological investigations is placed in the “Big Asica” group.
