action

On a train trip, the penniless composer Thomas met the rich publisher Melanie. The two get married and Melanie gives Thomas a lucrative job in her publishing house. The fits of jealousy and the need to control his wife are troubling Thomas. When he starts an affair with his secretary and demands a divorce from Melanie, Melanie commits suicide and makes it look like he killed her.

criticism

The lexicon of international films praised Palmer's portrayal, which carries the film alone, as an “excellent study of a psychopath”, but described the entire work as “a pseudo-problematic film that is chic and popular with the audience, based on a mediocre serial novel”. The BFI Companion to the German film names Devil in Silk as one of two examples (besides The Last Recipe ) for the society film popular in the 1950s, in which the emotional failures and moral problems during the economic boom were discussed.
