action

Auto mechanic Robbi Freitag trains on a disused stretch of road with his motorcycle. The young man dreams of becoming a racing driver. Robbi's mother doesn't think much of her son's ambitions, but his younger brother Peter thinks even more. After visiting a dance hall, Robbi begins to lurch on his motorcycle in the thick fog and hits an old man who is out and about with his dog. Fearing that he might block his future and not get a license as a racing driver, he leaves the seriously injured man on the street and runs away from the driver . The other day he reads in the newspaper that the helpless old man was run over by a delivery truck and killed. While Robbi is hit hard by this news, his girlfriend Lisa pressures him to remain silent. She is afraid that this will ruin both of their lives. When Robbi confesses to her that his motorcycle lost the exhaust in the accident, she sends him to another city to have a new exhaust installed, which works.

However, Robbi's little brother Peter had previously noticed that the exhaust was missing, as did the chaplain Rieder, who was present at the time. Robbie cannot just shake off this terrible incident, however, as he had believed, it is increasingly difficult for him to live with his guilt. When he tells Lisa about it, she appeals again to his feelings. The young woman, who grew up as an orphan, hopes for a better future alongside a future racing driver.

Peter goes to the police after all, but disappears again without a word when the officer he wanted to confide in makes a phone call. Not at peace with himself, he gets into a quarrel with a colleague in the garage where he works and hits him so hard that the man collapses. Robbi is then dismissed by his boss without notice. When Lisa learns about it at her workplace, a furniture factory, she provokes a breakdown. While she passed out, she tells Robbi about the motorcycle accident and what her colleague Betty overhears. Lisa threatens to kill her if she talks about it.

Betty, who is in a relationship with the violent crook Populescu, gossips in his presence after she has liked the alcohol too well. Populescu beats more information out of her because he senses a possibility to put Robbi under pressure and thereby make him compliant to support him in his criminal business. He has also taken a liking to Lisa and sees a way of making her submissive through blackmail. Robbi has since been approached by Kaplan Rieder, who offered his help. However, the young man does not take the helping hand and reacts defensively. He also pulls out of his mother, who has also noticed that Robbi has changed, and out of the apartment. Populescu now has free rein with Robbi and tries to use him for his purposes. And another sword of Damocles hovers over Robbi, the police have made progress with their investigations and are on to him.

Lisa is informed by Karli Specht, who works for Populescu but actually doesn't like him at all, but Lisa even more, about what his boss is planning and that the coup, breaking into a jewelry store, should take place shortly before midnight with Robbis Participation. In her need, Lisa sees only one way out and turns to Robbi's mother. She confesses everything to her and learns from her that the police have already been there. The two women go to the police together. Together with Lisa in the patrol car, the police drive to the jewelry store, where Robbi is with his motorcycle. Populescu is there too and is arrested by the police. Robbi, on the other hand, speeds away on his motorcycle and the police car with Lisa in the back follows him. Lisa also admits to hit and run during the chase. More police vehicles pursue Robbis and a barrier is set up. Robbi drives his motorcycle fully into this barrier. When the police car arrives with Lisa, you can only tell her about Robbi's death. She turns away with a lost look.

criticism

The lexicon of the international film judged: "From the everyday hit-and-run, the script develops a blackmail novel that remains the average German cinema until the end of the fatal chase."

Kino.de spoke of a “tragic crime film that, despite motives such as blackmail and persecution, focuses less on external tension, but focuses on the psyche of the motorcyclist played by the young Hartmut Reck and observes his increasing decline []. Vera Chekhova can be seen as a friend. The style of the film by TV director Dietrich Haugk (four feature films) is similar to the 'Sta [h] lnetz' episodes ”.
