Old Bridge of Urr Mill

The Old Bridge of Urr Mill is a watermill in the Scottish hamlet of Old Bridge of Urr in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The flour mill is located on the western edge of the hamlet on the left bank of Urr Water . It consists of two opposite building complexes. The mill building extends along the river with an adjoining threshing floor in the west and storage buildings in the east. The enclosed wooden waterwheel is possibly the only surviving one of its kind in Scotland. The overshot wheel is 4.88 m in diameter and 1.11 m wide. Cast iron bands stabilize the wheel with its wooden cells. The shaft is also made of cast iron. The internal machinery has largely been preserved.

The main building of the opposite complex forms a kiln . This is followed by one-story granaries and sheds. The masonry of all buildings is made of quarry stone and is partially whitewashed. With the exception of the corrugated iron roof of the coach house, the roofs are covered with slate. The miller's house is separate.
