Baldham is a part of the municipality of Vaterstetten in the Upper Bavarian district of Ebersberg . It is located approx. 18 km east of the state capital Munich and 15 km west of the district town of Ebersberg .

geography

Vaterstetten is located in the Munich region at the transition from the Munich gravel plain to the Ebersberger forest .

history

The "marketplace" completed in 2008 as the new Baldham town center

The original part of Baldham is the "Baldham Village", which has hardly changed to this day. It has around 800 residents, most of whom are long-established families. The place name indicates a foundation in the period of the Bavarian conquest of the 5th to 7th century (see article on -heim ). The first part of the name probably goes back to a first name like Balder / Baldur , but cannot be interpreted with certainty. On the map of the Munich area around de St. Michèl from 1768 the spelling Palthaim can be found.

Today, the majority of the population lives in the new development area around the Baldham S-Bahn station, two kilometers away . The breakpoint contributed greatly to Baldham's rapid population development. Numerous people settled there because of the combination of the convenient location near the city of Munich , the garden city character of the place and the comparatively cheap rents at the time. This large part of Baldham has grown together with Vaterstetten throughout.

Today's Vaterstetten community came into being with the municipal reform in 1978 . Before that, Vaterstetten together with today's districts of Hergolding, Neufarn, Parsdorf, Purfing, Neubaldham and Weißenfeld formed the municipality of Parsdorf. The district of Waldkolonie Pöring was separated from the former municipality of Pöring on May 1, 1978, the district of Kolonie Baldham from the municipality of Zorneding and incorporated into the municipality of Parsdorf. On May 2, 1978, just one day later, the parish was renamed from “Parsdorf” to “ Vaterstetten ”, as the settlement focus had long been established in the villages of Vaterstetten and Baldham.

economy

traffic

Baldham is on the B 304 and has a S-Bahn station.

The S-Bahn lines S4 and S6 run every 10 minutes to downtown Munich during commuter times (approx. 22 minutes to Marienplatz). Baldham is integrated into regional public transport via the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). Baldham Village has a Baldham Village bus stop.

Baldham has the five MVV regional bus routes 240V, 451, 452, 465 and 466.

The nearby motorways can be reached via the Haar ( A 99 ) and Parsdorf ( A 94 ) junctions . For Munich Airport is some 42 km away.

Thorak studio

The district of Kolonie Baldham was chosen as the location for the studio of Hitler's sculptor Josef Thorak before the beginning of World War II . The building erected by Albert Speer between 1938 and 1941 (today Waldstrasse 17) consists of a central structure with a height of 18 meters and a floor area of 700 m². On the front side three huge gates of 11.8 m high open, which should allow passage for the monumental statues. The three other sides of the central building are enclosed by a low extension.

The delegations of the German Army Group G and the 7th US Army met here on May 5, 1945 to negotiate the surrender of the 200,000 German soldiers in southern Germany. In the deed of surrender, however, the neighboring community of Haar is specified as the place of signature; the actual place of signing is not undisputed to this day, despite good sources.

After 1945 the building served the Americans as a garage and officers' mess and was nicknamed the "White Horse Inn" because of Thorak's horse sculptures. The Americans had set up the sculptures in the park and shot them when they left in 1947. The Baldham Forest School was then housed there until 1954. Then the KG Divina-Film GmbH & Co. (originally Diana-Film) from Ilse Kubaschewski used the area as Divina-Studio Baldham . From 1963 to 1983 the building was used as a backdrop warehouse for the Bavarian State Opera .

In 1989 the monument office took over the building as a depot. It is a listed building and is used today by the State Archaeological Collection .

societies

Baldham is home to the Baldham Boars baseball club and the Baldham-Vaterstetten sports club for football, tennis and table tennis.
