Herbert Strabel (born October 14, 1927 in Berlin ; † October 21, 2017 in Holzkirchen ) was a German film architect and Oscar winner.

Live and act

In 1942 Strabel began an apprenticeship at the Staatstheater , directed by Gustaf Gründgens , to which he was to belong until it closed in late summer 1944. He was then drafted and at the end of the war he was taken prisoner by the Soviets (May 1945 to April 1949). During this time he worked for two and three quarters of years as a backdrop painter at the "Dramatic Theater" in Karelian Pyrozavodsk .

In April 1949 he returned to Berlin, finished his training at the State Theater and worked there as a painter until 1952. In 1953, Strabel began his film career as a painter (for films like Das Bad auf der Tenne and Queen Luise ), and from the second half of the 1950s he worked regularly with the film architect Rolf Zehetbauer . At the beginning of the 1960s, Strabel, now based in Munich , advanced to an outfitter and ultimately to co-chief architect at Zehetbauer's side.

While Zehetbauer was responsible for the designs, it was mostly Strabel's job to implement them. As part of a more internationally oriented, West German film landscape, Herbert Strabel has also been involved in several English-language films shot in the greater Munich area since the 1970s. In 1973 , Strabel, along with Zehetbauer and his Berlin colleague Hans-Jürgen Kiebach , was awarded an Oscar for his achievements in the US film musical Cabaret , which was largely made in Munich in 1971 . Towards the end of the same decade he also took part in two productions by Ingmar Bergman .

At almost the same time, several orders from television were added. Strabel also looked after the buildings for literary material and TV games as well as those for entertainment programs (e.g. the decorations for the annual New Year's Eve shows). In September 1988 Herbert Strabel withdrew into private life.
