The unknown village of Arnstein in the Wachau : the village is celebrating its new landing stage and is eagerly awaiting the first tourists. However, only one young woman emerges from the passenger ship: Helga is not even a tourist, but wants to visit her former nanny Theres. Helga is studying interior design in Vienna , but separated from her fiancé, Professor Herdmenger, shortly before the end of her studies and now needs a distance from the big city. But Theres, the landlady of the linden tree, has enough problems herself: Business is bad, she is heavily in debt and the inn itself is run down. In addition, the little butcher Kilian Scherzl pursues her with grumpy malice, as she not only rejected his advances many years ago, but also inherited the Gasthof Linde , which he actually wanted. Scherzl has now bought up all of Theres' outstanding invoices and demands that she repay the entire amount. Otherwise he would take over the linden tree in the fall.
On a walk, Helga is surprised by a thunderstorm and takes refuge in a forest. It belongs to the private property of Arnstein Castle and is not allowed to be entered. The keeper of the castle, Fred, is not very pleased to see Helga, but asks her to go to the castle where she can dry her clothes. The young castle clerk Rosl is immediately enthusiastic, as Fred never brings a lady to the castle with him. She immediately spins a romantic love story between Fred and Helga from her booklets . In fact, Fred even brings Helga back to the linden landlady in the village that afternoon.
While Theres tries to get a loan from the bank in Vienna, Helga redesigns the linden tree . She surprisingly receives help from Fred, who has all of the castle's furniture brought to the linden tree on loan . The American lord of the castle, Mr. Stone, is in Japan and cannot come back anytime soon. Since Fred lives alone in the castle, he doesn't need the furniture. He also fell in love with Helga. The linden tree has now been prepared, but the tourists are still missing. Helga and Fred decide to hold a festival in Arnstein, as it is the 500th anniversary of the castle's construction. In the end, there will be several festive days in which the Linde is constantly booked out thanks to resourceful advertising and Theres finally takes enough money to pay off her debts.
However, entanglements are inevitable: Jimmy, Mr. Stone's nephew, appears with two friends in Arnstein and is amazed at the missing castle furniture. However, he quickly found a girlfriend in Rosl, and both ended up getting married, as it is written in Rosl's penny novels. Helga receives an unexpected visit from her ex-fiancé Prof. Herdmenger, who tries to persuade her to go with him to the university in Ankara as his assistant , and is appalled when Helga wants to stay in the Wachau. He suspects that Helga has a relationship with Fred and tries to convince him that he stands in the way of Helga's career. Since Fred himself had to give up his architecture studies because of the Second World War and never finished it after the end of the war, he gives up on Helga. He has also seen her in an ambiguous situation with Herdmenger and now suspects that both are still a couple after all.
Mr. Stone comes as a surprise to Arnstein and first stops at the linden tree , where he recognizes all of his furniture. Helga can convince him not to fire Fred. After Fred's rejection because of the incident with Herdmenger, she herself decided to leave Arnstein. When Mr. Stone tells Fred how much Helga had defended him, and Theres also reports that Helga had thrown Prof. Herdmenger out of the house, Fred runs after Helga and makes up with her. A double wedding follows: In addition to Rosl and Jimmy, who want to go to America, Helga and Fred also get married. Both go to Vienna to work together as architects. And Theres and Kilian Scherzl also make up in the end.

criticism
- Cinema found: “It is a popular prejudice that Heimatfilms are shallow, kitschy and sentimental. But it's true here. Conclusion: The oil painting fits: The roaring stag . "
- The lexicon of the international film expressed itself similarly , for which the Lindenwirtin vom Donaustrand “is a kitschy all-world love story in a cheap homeland film from Austria, which brings the romantic backdrop of the Wachau well into the picture”.
