action

The film portrays the life of the devout Catholic and religious sister Marie Ward, who was subjected to all kinds of harassment in England in the early 17th century because of her religious and social convictions in her home England, which had renounced Rome and the Catholic Church and committed itself to Protestantism . The daughter of a manor in Yorkshire then left the island at the age of 20 and moved to the continent. In France, she entered an order, which she left a little later to enforce her own ideas of Christian-Catholic salvation void, which have a strongly charitable, practical and pastoral character.

Marie has to overcome numerous obstacles and resistances of all kinds. The ecclesiastical institutions in the form of cardinals and popes are in opposition to her, just as the plague and the Thirty Years War repeatedly set back Marie's charitable work. At times, because of her progressive social work, she is even suspected of heresy by church authorities and has to expose herself to the Holy Inquisition . Marie Ward considers the struggle for the poor and the rights of young religious sisters to be particularly important. She fights to ensure that the nuns no longer have to stay exclusively behind the walls of the monastery, but that their charitable work also works outside of the city and is allowed to take care of worldly problems and grievances among the population. It was precisely this secular aspect that soon met with ever sharper rejection, and George Abbott, the Archbishop of Canterbury , even had spies shadowed her. When Marie Ward, physically exhausted from the quarrels and hostility, lies dying, there is no priest to give comfort and support. She dies among her few remaining loyal followers.

Reviews

“In her film, the director Angelika Weber has traced the combative and at the same time humble life of this woman who has permanently shaken the passive image of women of her time. (...) Angelika Weber was lucky enough to be able to shoot her opulent historical painting about the fate of this woman in original locations. This gives the film a very distinct, authentic character. The line-up of well-known actors, led by Hannelore Elsner as Marie Ward, is as impressive as the detailed and precise equipment. "

“The life of the founder of the order, Marie Ward, who had to fight for recognition of her community all her life. An elaborate, well-crafted historical film that uses the popular means of picture-sheet dramaturgy to promote courage and perseverance and a new female self-image in the church. A stimulus for discussion, even if the film depicts its heroine one-dimensional and does not convince in the thoughtful deepening and updating of the topic. "
