Wolf Appel

Wolf Appel (born May 1, 1942 in Senftenberg , Niederlausitz , † 1999 in Bern ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Appel was the son of the opera singer and artistic director Willy Appel (* 1904). He studied at the Berlin Conservatory and in Frankfurt am Main.

He received his first engagement in 1960 as a baritone at the Elbe-Elster-Theater in Wittenberg. After further studies in Frankfurt he was engaged as a choir singer at the Stadttheater Mainz from 1962 to 1964 . After changing his specialty to tenor, he was engaged at the Essen Opera House from 1964 to 1966, where he made his debut as David in Wagner's Meistersingern von Nürnberg .

Appel specialized in the tenor buffo and sang roles such as Mime ( Der Ring des Nibelungen ), David in the Mastersingers, Monostatos in the Magic Flute , Laca in Jenůfa by Janáček and Jaquino in Fidelio .

From 1966 to 1973 he was a member of the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, and since 1974 he has been a member of the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin . Appel has made guest appearances in Stuttgart, Hamburg, La Scala in Milan , San Francisco and Stockholm. At the Bayreuth Festival, he worked from 1973 to 1975 as Ulrich Eisslinger in the Meistersingers and in 1976 and 1977 in the so-called Jahrhundertring as a mime. Further guest appearances took the singer to the Teatro Liceo Barcelona in 1985 as a mime and in 1988 to the Zurich Opera House .
