action

Martin and Claire's relationship has reached a dead end. The sudden death of his mother suddenly brings Martin back to Los Angeles, where he has to deal with the formalities of the estate. He had also spent the first years of his childhood there. Linda, a friend of his mother's, takes him to his mother's house. As he settles down there, some memories from his childhood come to light that are a burden for Martin. After receiving some clues from a neighbor, he drives to Tijuana , Mexico, where he hopes to find Lola, a close friend of his mother's. He finally finds her at Club Americano , where Lola works as a dancer. Together they investigate what connects Martin with his mother and why she had become a stranger to him.

reception

The Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung gave the film 4 out of 6 stars and described the film as "France's film heritage in the next generation". Mathieu Demy would quote his parents Jacques Demy and Agnès Varda with a “cinematic homage” , especially from “Lola” (1960) and “The Model Shop” (1968). Despite the appearances of many companions and stars in supporting roles, the film is only "a somewhat aimless-looking road movie".

Margin notes

The memory scenes of Martin's childhood in Los Angeles come from Demy's mother Agnès Varda . Demy appears as a child in her 1981 film Documenteur .
