When Poldi moves into the maneuver is an Austrian comedy of mix-ups by Hans Quest , which premiered on September 7, 1956. It is based on the novella Maneuverzwilling by Johann Nestroy and ran under the alternative titles Maneuverzwilling and Die duds of the 4th Company .

Franz Stadler is an exemplary soldier and is practically engaged to Bertha, the daughter of Sergeant Krummbein. A military maneuver is announced and Franz's 69th Infantry Regiment wants to be particularly disciplined this time, as it has already lost 14 maneuvers against the enemy regiment. Franz's superior has the maneuver plans, the enemy will receive them from engineer Thomas. He is currently on the way to Juliendorf by train, where he is to move into quarters. On the train he gets to know the young Liesl, whom he protects from two pushy gentlemen, one of whom kisses her while driving through a tunnel. Liesl thinks that Thomas has kissed her, slaps him and is no longer on good terms with him. Coincidentally, both of them come to the same hotel in Juliendorf and are also accommodated in the same room by the simple-minded Poldi without Liesl noticing. Thomas, on the other hand, secretly lies down in the double bed from which Liesl chases him at night. On the run, however, Thomas accidentally takes her suitcase and the maneuver plans are left behind. The next day, Liesl brings his suitcase to the barracks and leaves them with an appointment in a café.
Franz Stadler has meanwhile secretly left the regiment, covered by his future son-in-law, to go to his father in Juliendorf. Here he is supposed to arrange a sale for the father. At the same time he wants to talk to him about marrying Bertha and get his approval. He should be back at the regiment within a very short time, which is actually under curfew due to the upcoming maneuver. On the way to the trading partner, however, Franz runs over a breeding bull and is imprisoned. In Juliendorf they noticed his absence and inevitably sent Franz's twin brother to the regiment - the dumb Poldi. He is cheeky out of sheer simplicity, recognizes neither Crookshanks nor Bertha and immediately lets regimental doctor Dr. Swoboda on sick leave. He is surprised that Franz is so completely changed, but believes he has discovered a new disease. He also pulls a molar tooth from Poldi, which had caused Franz pain. In order to be able to study the disease “in the wild”, Poldi must finally take part in the maneuver. When the regiment set off, Franz was also allowed to come out of prison. Unrecognized, he interferes in the maneuver. Although his regiment believes that it has to admit the 15th defeat after a very short time, Franz, with Poldi's involuntary help, manages to steal the trumpet of the enemy regiment and with it the trophy that means the defeat of the others. Franz is now considered a hero and Dr. Swoboda, who shortly before had given Poldi an injection with a cure for stupidity, is convinced of his medicine, especially since Franz also seems to have regrown the already extracted molar.
Different couples come to a happy end: Thomas and Liesl become a couple, Franz becomes engaged to Bertha, and Poldi and the simple cook Rosel also become lovers.

The film-dienst wrote, If Poldi pulls into the maneuver it is “a silly comedy of mistaken identity after Nestroy, whose satirical intention no longer comes into play; Last class in every respect. ”“ Thanks to Gunther Phillipp a pleasant pastime ”, however, said Cinema .
