Life

Steyr, urn cemetery at Tabor: grave Richard and Gabriele Romanowsky

Richard Romanowsky was the son of the railway official Johann Romanowsky and his wife Henriette, nee Hofmeister. His aunt was the opera singer Anna Sachse-Hofmeister . He first worked as a locksmith and wood sculptor. After acting lessons he received in 1905 a commitment at the German National Theater in Vienna, Czernowitz , 1906 at the Municipal Theater Znojmo , then in Linz, Graz and 1912 at the German Theater in Prague . In 1924 he played in Vienna and from 1925 in Berlin on various stages, including the Deutsches Theater . In the 1930s he returned to Vienna, where he was engaged by Max Reinhardt at the Theater in der Josefstadt and he was a member of the ensemble in 1925/26 and 1930/31 .

As in the theater, Romanowsky was mostly used as a comic character in film . Whether as a prince in Der Ammenkönig or, more often, as a subordinate employee, he repeatedly played marginal characters who appear amusing due to their awkwardness on the one hand and exaggerated trumpeting on the other.

In 1954 he had to undergo an operation due to an eye disease, which was successful. On April 18, 1958, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, he received the Medal of Honor from the federal capital Vienna .

Richard Romanowsky was married to Gabriele Antonia Maria Scheiter since 1912.

For many years Romanowsky had lived permanently in the Kurhotel Landessanatorium , Bad Hall , where he suffered an accident on July 15, 1968, as a result of which he died a week later in the Steyr State Hospital. His final resting place is in the urn cemetery at Tabor in Steyr, next to his wife Gabriele.
