Znojmo City Theater

The Znojmo City Theater ( Czech : Městské divadlo Znojmo ) is a building on náměstí Republiky (Republic Square) south of the center of Znojmo (Znojmo) in the Czech Republic . It is operated by the Znojemská Beseda Association .

history

The history of theatrical performances in Znojmo began primarily with Passion pieces performed outdoors . The first indications of recurring performances in covered venues can be found in the city's accounting books from 1548. The pupils of the school belonging to the parish of Sankt Michael are named as actors. In 1576, for example, they asked for the town hall to be used for the performance of a comedy. The following year the school belonging to the parish of Sankt Nikolai turned to the city council with the same request. In 1625 the pupils of the Jesuit college appeared in the town hall. On the occasion of a visit by Emperor Charles VI. in 1723 there was an opera performance. Further demonstrations in covered places took place in the Premonstratensian Monastery of Klosterbruck in 1728 .

The first permanent theater in the city was the former chapel of the Clarissa convent, which was abolished under Joseph II . Most of the cost of the adaptation was borne by the nobility in the Znojmo area. There was no permanent ensemble at the time, wandering drama troupes performed. No information is available about the program offered to the public. Only in 1789 was " The Fiesco Conspiracy in Genoa " given for the first time in Znaim .

In 1829 the theater was renovated and a dance hall was added. The former Peter and Paul Chapel on today's Wenceslas Square and an adjoining residential building were demolished to facilitate access.

From 1892, no more performances were held in the old Znojmo theater, as there were hardly any safety precautions to protect the audience. Appropriate measures were demanded by the responsible authorities - probably as a late consequence of the ring theater fire - which prompted the Znojmo city council to decide to build a new building and to commission some architects to draw up the plan. The house of Hugo Treu served as a provisional performance location until further notice. The previous theater was demolished in 1893.

In 1893, the Lieutenancy approved the withdrawal of 60,000 crowns from the Sparkasse's reserve fund for the construction of the new theater. In 1895 another 25,000 crowns followed.

In 1898 the issue of theater became a topic again in the city council, which decided on Salisplatz as the new location. In 1899, the Vienna- born architect Alexander Graf submitted plans and a cost estimate. The Znojmo civil engineer Adolf Janisch was commissioned to carry out the construction. The opening of the new city theater took place on September 29, 1900 with a performance of the swank “ Two happy days ” by Franz von Schönthan and Gustav Kadelburg .

The Znojmo City Theater was rebuilt several times before it was badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1945. Between 1992 and 2000 the theater underwent a general renovation and reopened on September 29 of the same year with a performance of the opera "Im Brunnen (V Studni)", composed in 1867 by Vilém Blodek .

It was possibly renamed " South Moravian Theater " in 1962.

The association Znojemská Beseda, founded by the Czech population of Znojmo around 1870, organized theater productions in Czech shortly after it was founded. Today this association is also the operator of the Znojmo City Theater in addition to other activities.

From 1920 there was a Czech theater in Znojmo in addition to the German one. The two theater companies shared the season, which lasted from October to Palm Sunday of the following year. According to a theater statute issued in 1925, all members of the ensemble should be Czechoslovak citizens. However, as long as the theater director took responsibility for his actors, this was refrained from.

description

For cost reasons, the Znojmo City Theater, which was built on an area of 734.5 square meters, was designed relatively unadorned on the outside. With the stepped gables above the central projection, above the stage and on the roof, the building resembles the Kaiser Jubilee City Theater , which Alexander Graf built in Vienna together with the architect Franz Freiherr von Krauss .

The auditorium with a balcony and four boxes was built in the neo-baroque style and kept in white, red and gold. The ceiling above the ground floor armchairs was decorated with paintings, while a ventilation rosette and a chandelier were located above the balcony. Stucco decorations and the Znojmo city coat of arms were placed above the stage portal .

The auditorium, which originally had a capacity of 616, now offers 278 seats.

actor

The Viennese actress Hansi Niese made her debut at the Znojmo City Theater in 1891. In 1906 Richard Romanowsky got an engagement here. Willi Forst and Max Pallenberg were also involved here at the beginning of their careers.
