Franz von Krauss (architect)

Franz Freiherr von Krauss (born June 14, 1865 in Vienna ; † February 24, 1942 there ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

Franz von Krauss was the son of Franz Freiherr von Krauss (1837-1919), a senior civil servant who was police chief of Vienna in 1886, and from 1892 regional president of Bukovina .

After studying architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Karl von Hasenauer and Friedrich von Schmidt , he worked as a freelance architect from 1894 and founded an architecture office together with Josef Tölk .

Franz von Krauss and Josef Tölk were very successful. Her buildings included residential houses and villas in Austria and the countries of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy , utility buildings such as the Franzensbrücke over the Vienna Danube Canal and theaters such as the Volksoper (with architect Alexander Graf ; 1898), the Wiener Kammerspiele and the Vienna City Theater, which was demolished in 1960 . The Kurhaus Semmering was also designed by these two architects. In the 1920s, the team also participated in municipal housing in Vienna and built part of the Sandleitenhof . Franz von Krauss was also a member of the Austrian Werkbund .
