The father Anton Tölk came from Bohemia and settled in Weikersdorf in Lower Austria, today a district of Baden , where he held various influential offices. After graduating from the building trade school, Josef Tölk attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1880 to 1883 under Theophil von Hansen . He then worked in the Fellner & Helmer office until around 1890 . There he got to know the younger Franz von Krauss , with whom he formed an office community from the mid-1890s, which lasted Tölks until the end of his life in 1927. This atelier Krauss Tölk was one of the most successful architecture firms in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century. The architects Krauss and Tölk preferred a late historic neo-baroque style, into which they later also incorporated decorative elements from Art Nouveau . Since they only adopted secessionist design elements without sharing the fundamental intentions of modernity, they were criticized by Otto Wagner , who accused them of being proponents of a false modernity. Nevertheless, Krauss and Tölk were very popular with their clients, and they satisfied their needs for representation very well. In addition, the range of her work was very wide; In addition to residential buildings and villas, it also included commercial premises, cafes, theaters, factories, bridges and hospitals. As with most of the architects of that time, Krauss and Tölk's successful years also ended with the First World War, as the economy and orders subsequently fell sharply. It is difficult to say who did what within the architectural office. It is assumed that Krauss was more responsible for the formal side, whereas Tölk was responsible for the technical side of their buildings.
