Life

Wolny comes from a relatively wealthy family of clothiers who made it possible for him to attend high school in Freiberg. He studied philosophy in Brno (1811) and theology in Olomouc (1812–1815). In 1816 he became a monk and joined the Benedictine order in the Raigern monastery in Moravia.

In the monastery he devoted himself mainly to historical work on Moravia, which was only interrupted by a teaching activity as professor of world history and philology at the Brno grammar school (1821–1843). He collected extensive historical and statistical material. This included, for example, thousands of documents that provided him with the land table and the holdings of the Moravian monasteries, but preferably the archives of the Olomouc bishopric and chapter, as well as official statistics, supplemented by reports from the patrimonial and ecclesiastical authorities.

Gregor Wolny's research inspired numerous students and colleagues (e.g. Christian d'Elvert , Beda Dudík , Peter von Chlumecký , Boczek , Chytil and others) to do something similar. In recognition of his services, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Prague and many other honors.
