Beda Dudík (actually Franziskus / Franz Dudík, Czech : Beda František Dudík ; born January 29, 1815 in Kojetín ; † January 18, 1890 as abbot and titular abbot of Trebitsch in the Raigern / Rajhrad monastery ) was a Benedictine in Austrian Moravia in the 19th century , Historian , priest and writer.

Life

Beda Dudík was the eldest of Vincenc and Magdalena Dudík's nine children . After studying philosophy in Brno , he moved to the University of Olomouc . In 1836 he joined the Benedictine order and was ordained a priest on August 20, 1840 in the Raigern monastery in Moravia.

For historical research he went to Sweden in 1851 and to Rome in 1852. Until 1854 worked as a teacher of classical languages ​​and history in a grammar school in Brno. In 1855 he became a private lecturer in historical research at the University of Vienna . Between the years 1853 and 1859 he founded the historical library of the Teutonic Order in Vienna . In 1859 he became professor of medieval history and historiographer of Moravia. Because of this activity, contemporaries sometimes referred to him as the Moravian Palacký .

In 1866 he was a war correspondent in Italy and in 1869 personal chaplain of Emperor Franz Joseph I. In 1870 he visited France, Belgium and Holland for research purposes, and in 1874 also Russia, which he later visited again and again. From 1870 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
