occupation

Labyrinth , also known as the Labyrinth of Passions , is a German-Italian fictional film from 1959 by Rolf Thiele with Nadja Tiller and Peter van Eyck in the leading roles.

action

Georgia Gale is young, beautiful, intellectual ... and she drinks. After a serious crisis, she began to pick up the bottle in an uncontrolled manner and is now in danger of falling victim to the alcoholism that is a tradition in her family. In order to be treated psychotherapeutically for this reason, she is admitted to a luxurious sanatorium in Switzerland. Here is the realm of chief physician Dr. de Lattre, to whom she cannot build a deeper trust, but which is absolutely essential for the success of the therapist. For this reason, she is not ready to open herself up. This makes it impossible to research the cause of their narcissistic nature and the reason for their decline.

Georgia continues to play a role here, too, fooling itself, flirting with an alleged longing for death and taking refuge in a sudden religiosity. She only gains confidence in her fellow patient Ron Stevens, who is also treated in the private sanatorium, and establishes contact with him. But then an event happens that shakes the inner walls of Georgia's walled-in self: The young nymphomaniac patient Marjorie, who is turned away by her when she tries to advances, kills herself in front of her eyes. Deeply shocked, Georgia begins to understand that there is content and responsibility to a full life. She no longer wants to close herself off to therapeutic healing that could promise an exit from her previous life. After her successful treatment, the beautiful patient leaves the clinic, determined to start a new life.

Reviews

The Süddeutsche Zeitung of September 17, 1959 summed up: Once again Thiele proves to be "an unsurpassed specialist in hard brilliance, sultry coolness, cultivated hysteria."

Paimann's film lists summed up: "A German ' snake pit ', thoroughly clearing the soul and with a believable interpreter, impersonal-academic but careful presentation, leaving the average viewer uninvolved and only interesting for lovers of clinical material."

"... a tangled treatise on a luxury sanatorium ..."

- Der Spiegel , No. 17 of April 24, 1963

“A 'Zeitgeist' study that was excellently photographed and played very subtly in the main role. Formally, Rolf Thiele tries to create a sophisticated atmosphere that gives the film a cold and fascinating shine. "
