George W. Morey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Washington Morey (born January 9, 1888 in Minneapolis , Minnesota , † October 3, 1965 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American chemist (geochemistry, physical chemistry), mineralogist and petrologist.

Life

Morey studied chemistry at the University of Minnesota with a bachelor's degree in 1909 and was a member of the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution in Washington, DC until his retirement in 1953 in 1953, he was acting director of the laboratory before Philip H. Abelson replaced him.

He dealt with experimental studies on phase equilibria and thermodynamics of silicate melts with volatile components. In 1917 he published a work with Fenner on the development of pressure in magmas during crystallization and in 1925 with Norman L. Bowen on glass melts. As a result, he became an expert in glass and during the Second World War headed the laboratory's work on optical glasses for the military.

In 1948 he received the first Arthur L. Day Medal , in 1959 the Howard N. Potts Medal (for optical glass of high refractive index and low dispersion) and he received the Hillebrand Prize of the Chemical Society of Washington (of which he was once president). He was a Fellow of the Geological Society of America , the British Society of Glass Technology, and the American Ceramic Society, which awards a George W. Morey Award for glass technology.
