Amedeo Nazzari (actually Amedeo Carlo Leone Buffa ; born December 10, 1907 in Cagliari , † November 5, 1979 in Rome ) was an Italian actor .

Life

Amedeo Nazzari dropped out of engineering studies in favor of a career as an actor and first worked in the theater with the troops of Annibale Ninchi , Marta Abba , Luigi Pirandello and Tatiana Pavlova . In 1935 he came to film and made his debut under the direction of Guido Brignone in Ginevra degli Almieri . In the following years he was successful as a cavalry captain in the melodrama Cavalleria (1936) and the war film Luciano Serra pilota (1938), both by Goffredo Alessandrini . His appearance in Alessandro Blasetti's La cena delle beffe (1938) is considered one of Nazzari's best acting performances. Alongside Vittorio de Sica, he became one of the most elegant and popular male actors in Italian film in the 1930s and 1940s. Even in the first decade and a half after the Second World War, its popularity with the public remained unbroken. In 1949, Raffaello Matarazzo's melodrama Catene marked the beginning of a long-term film partnership with actress Yvonne Sanson . With Federico Fellini , Nazzari played a disappointed film star in Le Notti di Cabiria (1956).

From the 1960s onwards he was mostly only used in supporting roles, but appeared in numerous international productions, including Henri Verneuil's Le clan des Siciliens (1969) and Vincente Minnelli's Nina - Just a Question of Time (A Matter of Time , 1976), on. During this time, Nazzari was also a television actor in films and series such as La donna di cuori (1969) by Leonardo Cortese . In 1978 his last film Melodrammore by Maurizio Constanzo was released ; Nazzari plays himself in it.
