The gray galley (original title: Odio mortale ; alternative title: The knights of the gray galley - death to the traitor! ) Is an Italian adventure film by Franco Montemurro from 1962.

action

In 1660 French troops challenged the world power Spain for control of Florida by occupying Fort Carolina. During the New Year celebrations, the Spanish manage to retake the fort with a surprise attack. They are helped by the traitor Dominique De Gourges, who also stabs the French governor from behind and is rewarded for his actions by the Spaniards with the vacated post as governor. André, the governor's best friend, has to flee with his little daughter Solange.

15 years later, André became the leader of a pirate gang under the name Ruiz , to which Solange also belongs. Meanwhile, the unpopular De Gourges has become so worn down by the continuing attacks by pirates on his troops that he begins to forge an escape plan. He teams up with the English , who want to grant him protection if he can get them a gold-laden Spanish caravel that will soon arrive . When the gold ship is in port, a number of felons are smuggled up from the prison under the leadership of De Gourges' confidante, Captain Herrera. They have been given the task of capturing it in exchange for their release on the open sea, so that it looks as if the English are behind it. However, the pirates get wind of the venture and help the Spanish captain Carlos back to his ship, making them allies.

Together they sail back to Fort Carolina, where Captain Carlos pretends to have survived the attack. At night, when the feast of St. Carolina is in progress, Carlos lowers the drawbridge of the fort, which is immediately stormed by Ruiz and his men. However, the pirate Real, dissatisfied with Ruiz's management style, had betrayed the ruse to De Gourges, which resulted in great losses for the trapped attackers. You can still hold your own against the Spaniards. Forced to flee De Gourges falls into the hands of Solange, who is to get her freedom back in exchange for the gold ship as soon as he has arrived in safe England.

Carlos now hijacks the English ship with which De Gourges wanted to meet and rushes to help Ruiz, who had secretly stayed on the gold ship to free Solange. In a final fight, Ruiz settles bloodily with De Gourges.
