history

Native Americans from the Lenni Lenape tribe originally settled in the area from 1390 onwards. The first white settlers in the area were Welsh, Scots and later Germans.

The New Britain Township was founded in 1723. The township included 15,000 acres of land and the villages of Chalfont and later New Britain (village). Initially, large parts of today's Doylestown (township) also belonged to the New Britain Township. Today the township has 9,900 acres of land.

In 1778, George Washington and his soldiers reached the township to move on to New Jersey. He used the Butler Pike (now Route 202) and Limekiln Pike (now Route 152), which were often old Indian trails.

Lead ore was found from 1838 and mining began on an ever larger scale from 1861. After the production was exhausted, the old mines were filled with water and Lake Galena was created , which is now in the center of Peace Valley Park .

It is believed that Lenni Lenape chief Tamanend was buried in New Britain Township. William Penn negotiates a. a. with Tamanend, that the Indians withdraw from this area and that space is available for the first white settlers. The parents of Daniel Boone , a well-known American pioneer and hunter, are said to have lived not far from Chalfont . It is believed that he was born there or in Birdsboro in 1734 before his parents moved on to North Carolina .

From 1856 the village of New Britain was connected to the rail network to Philadelphia . To this day there are many homesteads in this area.
