Do you think Constanze is doing the right thing? is a German social comedy from 1962 based on a model by W. Somerset Maugham . Lilli Palmer , Peter van Eyck and Carlos Thompson play the leading roles .

In St. Moritz , Dr. Calonder a prosperous medical practice. In the winter season, the international jet set is present there. To the displeasure of his wife Constanze, Calonder paid particular attention to his female patients. Carelessly, the doctor devotes himself particularly intensively to his wife's best friend, the classy and seductive blonde Marie-Louise, who in turn is married to an opera tenor. This does not remain hidden from Constanze, and she tries to recapture her husband - with her very own methods.
If her husband is threatened with apostasy, why shouldn't she look elsewhere? If only to make her Fred jealous. And that's where the pretty poet Bernard Somerset comes into play, a childhood friend of Constanze's. In order to make Fred jealous, Constanze decides to arrange a rendezvous with Bernard in such a way that Fred has to believe that he has had serious competition in the attractive charmer. With her skillful feminine tactics, she can finally win back her husband, who, in her opinion, is in danger of going astray.
Production notes
The film, produced by Peter Goldbaum's own Munich production company based on his script, is based on Maugham's novel The Constant Wife . The film was shot at the beginning of the year (January / February) 1962. The premiere took place on March 30, 1962 in Hanover.
Lilli Palmer and Carlos Thompson were married in real life. The buildings were designed by Herbert Kirchhoff and Albrecht Becker .

All in all, the reviews were pretty poor:
In its May 2, 1962 issue, Der Spiegel stated: “Regardless of the roles, the three stars make the expressions that they have evidently put on once and for all for film purposes, and they serve, unpractised in punchline ping pong delightfully casual, smug jokes by the author Somerset Maugham with the clumsy clarity of village comedians. Nevertheless, the clever joke with which the British literary millionaire once endowed the characters in his comedy (1927) helped the coarse film adaptation occasionally to dialogical liveliness. "
In the issue of April 27, 1962, Die Zeit read: “The film roles are cast with Lilli Palmer, Dorian Gray, Peter van Eyck and Carlos Thompson, and that should have resulted in a decent star film. However, director Tom Pevsner came up with the unfortunate idea of making the stars act like great actors. That was extremely unfair towards them, because acting is not their forte. In this way, not a lot of punchlines are preserved from Maugham's comedy. "
