action
After the end of the First World War, the former fighter pilot Luciano Serra earned a living for himself and his family by organizing sightseeing flights over Lake Maggiore for tourists . Luciano's wife cannot understand why her husband turned down an offer to get a well paid position in his father-in-law's factory in favor of the low-profit aviation business. So she leaves her husband with their small child and returns to their parents' house.
Years later, Luciano was won over by an enterprising manager for an Atlantic flight. However, he soon realizes that with this commitment his illustrious name is being used for unfair advertising. He was about to quit when he received a letter from his now almost grown-up son Aldo asking him to agree to be accepted into the Italian Aviation Academy. Luciano is only too happy to do this; it makes him proud that his son has inherited his passion for flying from him. To give him a shining example, he single-handedly dares to take a risky overseas flight. The company fails; Luciano remains missing.
Aldo Serra has successfully completed the Aviation Academy. As a lieutenant in a reconnaissance squadron, he was sent to the front in the Abyssinian War. The victory of Italy no longer seems distant; but robber gangs are making the roads to Addis Ababa unsafe. Aldo is supposed to secure the railway line. During this mission he is wounded and has to make an emergency landing. The locals manage to destroy the tracks. In the ensuing fight, the Italians are outnumbered. If you had a ready-to-use pilot now, he could alert the camp in Gareb and get help. The legionnaire Alberto Conti answers. But this one is none other than Luciano Serra, who was believed to be lost. He recognizes his son in the wounded Aldo. Luciano manages to steer his machine to Gareb and get the longed-for help. However, he has to pay for this act with his life.
Award
In 1938 the work was awarded the “Coppa Mussolini” at the Venice Film Festival , which today corresponds to the “ Golden Lion ”. Between life and death is considered a fascist propaganda film , especially since Benito Mussolini's son Vittorio Mussolini had both the idea for the material and the overall direction of the film.
