Cesare Giulio Viola

Cesare Giulio Viola (born November 26, 1886 in Taranto , Apulia , † October 3, 1958 in Positano , Campania ) was an Italian writer and screenwriter who was once nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay .

Life

Viola, son of the well-known archaeologist Luigi Viola , completed a law degree after attending school and wrote his novel debut in 1909 with L'altro volto che ride . After completing his military service during the First World War , he wrote other novels such as Capitoli (1922) and Pricò (1924) in the early 1920s . He then went to Rome, where he was deputy editor-in-chief of the literary magazine Nuova Antologia between 1926 and 1931 . In addition, several stage works such as Quella (1933), which were also performed in the open-air touring theater Carro di Tespi , were created. Some of his works were also created under the pseudonym I Dieci .

At the end of the 1930s, he also began working as a screenwriter for the war film Between Life and Death (Luciano Serra pilota, 1938) by Goffredo Alessandrini with Amedeo Nazzari , Germana Paolieri and Roberto Villa . He worked as a screenwriter in the production of ten other films until 1956.

At the Academy Awards in 1948 he was nominated together with Sergio Amidei , Adolfo Franci and Cesare Zavattini for the Oscar for the best original screenplay for the feature film Schuhputzer (Sciuscià, 1946), also directed by De Sica , in which Franco Interlenghi , Rinaldo Smordoni and Emilio Cigoli die Main roles played.
