Giorgio Simonelli

Giorgio Carlo Simonelli (born November 23, 1901 in Rome ; † October 3, 1966 there ) was an Italian film director and film editor .

Life

After obtaining a degree in economics , Simonelli worked as a journalist and also wrote film reviews for magazines such as “Gente nostra” or “Avvenimento”. In 1928 he directed the silent film Maratona with Fausto Neroni and two years later he was one of the scriptwriters of the first Italian sound film, Le canzone dell'amore . Simonelli became an assistant to Guido Brignone and Gennaro Righelli ; from 1934 he was involved in numerous productions of the decade as a film editor. He was also responsible for directing two films; one of them as Carlo de Lellis . During these years he was responsible for the company's official film magazine at the production company Cines , headed by Emilio Cecchi .

In 1940 he finally moved to the director's chair and specialized in his around sixty films on comedies, which often had great audiences but were less well-reviewed by the critics. Simonelli worked with all the great comedians in the country, such as Totò , Eduardo De Filippo , Nino Taranto , Erminio Macario , Renato Rascel , Ugo Tognazzi , Alberto Sordi and, towards the end of his life, with the grotesque comedians Franco & Ciccio . Occasionally he was also involved in the scripting of his films.

In 1959 Simonelli took part in the “Cinema dell'Umorismo a Bordighera ” with Noi siamo due evasi . He is the father of Giovanni Simonelli .
