Cydia is a free computer program for the mobile operating system Apple iOS that allows the user to browse and download of software and tweaks for iPhone , touch iPod , iPad and Apple TV allows.
Prerequisite is that the firmware using a so-called jailbreak has been modified so that software not only - as standard provided - from the App Store of the manufacturer Apple , but can also be installed from any other sources. Cydia was developed by Jay Freeman (also known as saurik ) and his company SaurikIT, LLC and was originally published as an open source alternative to Installer.app on iOS 1.1.x. Starting with firmware version 2.x, it quickly developed into the most popular package manager. Most jailbreak programs for unlocking iOS devices include the installation of Cydia by default.
history
In September 2010, SaurikIT, LLC bought competitor Rock Your Phone, Inc. All apps, users and licenses were transferred to the Cydia Store.
In December 2018, a security gap became known, Jay Freeman (saurik) then closed the Cydia Store, which he planned to do at the end of 2018 due to excessive losses. Since then, Cydia has been developed without a store.
Functions
Cydia provides a graphical user interface for some open source software installation tools originally developed for Debian (specifically APT and dpkg package management system).
Cydia repositories allow the installation of software packages, most of which are free to download.
Cydia includes a store that has a range of applications for sale. Both the free and paid software packages are downloaded directly to an iOS device and installed in the same location in the file system (Applications directory) as the pre-installed Apple applications. A user account had to be set up for the purchase.
