Giovanni Marinoni

Giovanni Marinoni (born December 25, 1490 in Venice , † December 13, 1562 in Naples ) was a member of the Catholic men’s order of the Theatines and is a blessed of the Catholic Church .

Born as Francesco Marinoni to Bergamasque parents, he decided to pursue a career as a clergyman and studied theology at the University of Padua . Back in Venice, he first became a sexton and finally a canon of San Marco . On December 9th, 1528 he received the order of the Theatines from Giampietro Carafa, later Pope Paul IV (1555–1559) and changed his name from Francesco to Giovanni.

During the epidemic and famine of 1528 in Venice, he and his friars built charitable structures and founded a hospice. On the orders of Pope Clement VII (1523–1534) Giovanni Marioni and his friar Gaetano da Thiene (1480–1547) went to Naples to counter the Lutheran Reformation movement there.

In addition to his work as a preacher in the sense of Roman Catholicism, he sees cultural and intellectual education as well as the fight against illiteracy and poverty among the population as one of his most important tasks.

He died of cholera on December 13, 1562 in Naples and was buried next to Gaetano da Thiene in the Basilica of San Paolo Maggiore there. Giovanni Marinoni was on September 11, 1762 by Pope Clement XIII. beatified.
