Jay Ryan Freeman (saurik) (born November 27, 1981 ) is an American entrepreneur, software developer, hacker and local politician. He became known for the invention and development of Cydia , whose development he still leads today.

Beginnings and training

Freeman graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in computer science in 2003 . From 2004–2009 he did his doctorate in computer science, which he did not graduate. In 2002 Freeman created Anakrino , the first .NET decompiler .

iOS

In February 2008, Jay Freeman launched Cydia , an app store for jailbroken iOS devices. In 2009, he expanded this system with a proprietary shop that made it possible for users to purchase apps. In 2011 he released JailbreakMe 3.0 with which the IPhones , IPod Touches and the iPad 2 could be unconditionally jailbreaked directly via the iOS app Safari, whereby Cydia was also installed directly on the devices. In December 2018, Freeman declared the Cydia Store closed as it had become a losing project due to excessive traffic. Furthermore, Freeman is a respected person in the iOS jailbreaking community and moderates the jailbreak subreddit , among other things .

Android

In 2008, he ported Debian for use on the HTC Dream Android device .

In April 2013 he built an implementation of a root for Google Glass . In May 2013 he published a version of Cydia Substrate for Android, in July 2013 he published an analysis and an implementation of the "Master Key" vulnerabilities for Android.
