Purbach Turk
The Purbach Turk is a legendary figure and the symbol of the Burgenland town of Purbach am Neusiedler See . A stone figure of the Purbach Turk is located on the chimney of the house at Schulgasse 9.
history
The legend describes: A Turkish troop of horsemen plundered Purbach in 1532. The residents had fled into the forest. A Turk got so drunk that he stayed in the cellar. When he woke up his comrades were gone. He heard the peasants returning and hid in the chimney. When he looked out above he was discovered. He was driven out with the help of a heavily smoking fire. The captured soldier was baptized and became a servant to the owner of the house. As a reminder of this incident, a replica of the Turk was placed on the chimney. From there he still looks down today.
The historical truth of this legend can no longer be grasped today.
