Wilhelm Bender (soccer player)

Wilhelm Bender (* 1915 ; † 1944 ) was a German football player . He played in the position of defender and is considered one of the best players that VfL Klafeld-Geisweid has produced so far.

Life

Bender began playing football in his youth at Spielvereinigung 08 Klafeld-Geisweid . After he was promoted to the senior sector there, the then Reich trainer Otto Nerz became aware of him. In May 1936, Nerz nominated him for the first time for the national team . On May 9th, Bender played his first game in the national jersey in the first of five test matches against FC Everton and just two months later, on July 1st, he was one of 42 players of the German Reich in the training camp for the Summer Olympics in Berlin invited. There he seriously injured his knee and therefore had to refrain from participating in the games.

In 1944, Bender died as a soldier in World War II .
